CELEBRATE 250 "HISTORY TALKS" PRESENTS A VISIT WITH JAMES MONROE

Celebrate!250 History Talks: A Visit with James Monroe

On Tuesday, February 7th, Dennis Bigelow of Ash Lawn will be bringing his portrayal of President James Monroe to City Council Chambers as part of the Celebrate!250 History Talks series. Attendees are invited to ask President Monroe any questions they may have, and Mr. Bigelow will respond in character. Dennis Bigelow has served for years as the costumed James Monroe interpreter. He has been a Fortune 500 communications specialist and a Screen Actors Guild performer. Mr. Bigelow anchored “Today in Banking” for the Satellite Conference Network and was a spokesperson for USA Today.  While vice president of New York’s Veteran’s Hospital Radio and Television Guild, he was recognized by Veteran’s Affairs “for his effectiveness in drama therapy” with hospitalized vets. Ancestral nephew of Chief Justice John Marshall (life-long friend and hut mate of Monroe’s at Valley Forge), Dennis Bigelow teaches history through Louisa Teamworks/Piedmont Virginia Community College. He served as a U.S. Marine officer 1967-70, with assignment to Armed Forces Radio & TV before going to Vietnam.

These talks are hosted by Charlottesville Tomorrow, the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, and the City of Charlottesville. Each talk will last 1 hour and include a short question-and-answer period. These events are free and open to the public, and begin at noon in City Council Chambers.

A complete list of the lectures is attached here and available both at the Celebrate!250 website and on Charlottesville Tomorrow’s calendar.

THE OXFAM AMERICA HUNGER BANQUEST

On February 16th, 2012, Charlottesville High School students and members of the community will get an opportunity to learn about global hunger, firsthand. The Oxfam America Hunger Banquet at Charlottesville High School will take place February 16th at 6:00 pm in B Commons at CHS. Oxfam America is an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice. Oxfam’s signature event, a Hunger Banquet, raises awareness about a pressing issue that is often hard to envision. Guests are asked to contribute either a $5 donation to Oxfam America or bring 3 canned food items to donate to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Students, teachers, and members of the community are all welcome to attend!
Here’s how it works: Guests draw tickets at random that assign them each to either a high-, middle-, or low-income tier— based on 2011 statistics about the number of people living in poverty around the world. Each income level receives a corresponding meal: The 15 percent in the high-income tier are served a sumptuous meal; the 35 percent in the middle-income section eat a simple meal of rice and beans; and the 50 percent in the low-income tier help themselves to small portions of rice and water. Many thanks to Whole Foods Market in Charlottesville, which has agreed to cater the event.
In addition, Michael McKee of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank will discuss the presence of hunger in our own community and how we can take action locally. After a Hunger Banquet, few participants leave with full stomachs, but all possess a greater understanding of the problems of hunger and poverty and will feel motivated to do something about them. Participants are asked to RSVP to the “Oxfam America Hunger Banquet at CHS” event on Facebook or by emailing rebecca.schectman@comcast.net.

Celebrated British playwright Caryl Churchill uses the backdrop of the 17th Century witch trials to highlight the ongoing struggles for acceptance and equality faced by women, even in our world today. Originally penned amid the women’s rights movement of the 1970’s Churchill’s story and themes force all of us to ask tough questions about our own roles in the discrimination we encounter all around us or even participate in.
